Making records, the fun way.
About
Michael is an engineer specializing in jazz and classical recording and mixing. Equally at home in the studio or on location, his passion for the craft is in the pursuit of fidelity and musicality. With a particular focus on historical jazz recording, his sound spans the jazz genre from its mono beginnings to cutting edge Dolby Atmos techniques. Michael’s approach to recording: simplicity and intentionality.
After falling in love with audio engineering while at McGill University studying the saxophone, Michael earned a Masters in Recording and Production from the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University. He cut his teeth at the Banff Centre for the Arts recording artists of the likes of Marc André-Hamelin, the Ehnes Quartet, Shabaka Hutchings, and Caity Gyorgy, where he learned the fundamentals of jazz and classical recording. Diving deep into the sound of classic jazz records, he researched and conducted recording field tests to recreate the sounds of Rudy Van Gelder. He is the staff engineer at 2nd Story Sound, giving him the opportunity to assist some of the greatest engineers in the city on a variety of jazz, classical, and other acoustic music sessions. Michael is also a general assistant at Power Station at Berklee NYC, working with a brilliant team of engineers and assistants on large-format sessions in all genres. As a freelance engineer, Michael has worked in a variety of studios and remote recording locations, bridging the gap between home and professional studios.
